The EC concluded an agreement with the Yemeni national population Council based on their proposal to execute a national level based information, education and communication (IEC) programme for population and family planning. EPOS cooperates with Options Consultancy Services Ltd. (lead firm) on this project.
The programme had the objective to increase, through the use of multi mass media, the Yemeni public's knowledge, understanding and commitment, at all levels, with regard to population related issues, women's health and family care, in order to promote a higher acceptance of the interrelationship between fertility and mortality rates, and of the significant influence that imbalanced population growth had on persistent widespread poverty, low standards of reproductive health and serious social and gender inequities. The tasks assigned included: Improve message development and design through proper formative audience research and analysis Enhance IEC capacity of policy and decision-makers, health and media personnel through proper training Develop and disseminate appropriate messages through mass media and folk media, to promote a higher acceptance of family care, including reproductive and sexual health. Visual aids at the level of the Ministry of Health and non-governmental organisations Strengthen existing coordination mechanisms and capabilities developed among sectoral agencies and institutions involved in IEC activities and promote regular specific planning and coordinating meetings and reviews involving the relevant agencies
